Seafood Scotland
Seafood in Schools: bringing seafood into the classroom and home
The seafood sector is a vital part of Scotland’s economy and a global culinary treasure. However, in many areas of the country, Scottish seafood is largely unknown by young people – beyond their local fish and chip shop or supermarket.
The Seafood in Schools programme is designed to bridge this gap in seafood education. It highlights to pupils the range of delicious and sustainable species available and helps them understand the significant role seafood plays in Scotland’s economy.
A key part of the programme involved Seafood Scotland holding workshops in primary schools around Scotland throughout 2023.
Who benefitted?
The programme was launched in fishing communities around Aberdeenshire, then expanded across Scotland’s central belt to include Edinburgh, the Lothians, Stirlingshire, Glasgow and the West.
Designed with P5 pupils in mind – but flexible enough to accommodate P4-6 classes – our workshops provided an interactive and educational experience tailored to this age group.
We are in the process of developing workshops for a secondary school audience and will be reaching out to schools across Scotland to take part as the programme develops.
What was included?
Our workshops included an overview of the Scottish seafood sector, details about fish species found in our waters, insights into fishing methods, and an exploration of the diverse job opportunities within the industry.
To add a level interactivity, pupils were encouraged to identify different fish species and where they could be found in the water column. Activity sheets helped reinforce what they had learned.
The final part of each workshop involved a cooking demonstration which showcased three simple recipes with the opportunity for pupils to sample each, giving some of them their first taste of seafood.
To extend the learning beyond the classroom, we provided gift bags to take home. These contained recipe cards and ingredients, empowering pupils to share their newfound knowledge and create affordable seafood meals at home. It also raised awareness of seafood as an affordable protein option among parents and guardians.

Parents/Guardians
We know children learn best when they’re having a good time and doing things they enjoy. Is your child a budding chef?
Do they prefer crosswords of puzzles? Check our activity sheet here.
Schools
Did you know there are 65 species of fish in Scottish waters? Or that different species are caught in different ways?
Our workshops are filled with information that engage with pupils at their level and encourage them to ask more questions – ensuring they remain interested throughout.
